WYTCH PYCKNYCK’s stomping fuzz attack. Seven songs of magnificence

HASTINGS-based psychedelic, post punk, garage rockers WYTCH PYCKNYCK have just released their self-titled debut album via ‘Property of the lost Records.’

The band came to life as the brainchild of friends Malt Jones (guitar/vocals) and Bonj (guitar/vocals) and soon found themselves playing dates in the UK and Europe. Following the lockdown separations, they were re-born with Sam Davies (drums), and Ewan Fitzgerald (bass/synth), who joined following the demise of former band, Butane Regulators.

Previous single ‘Rawkuss’ distorts with the guitar cacophony edging into red light territory, while ‘Frostbite,’ mutates into a space rock, psychedelic travel fest, with bassist Fitzgerald’s passion for analogue synths to the fore.

“It’s something wild, strong and traditional about a group of repressed, incarcerated and badly treated individuals managing to rally themselves together, against the man, to throw a party,” said Jones. “One hundred percent pure defiance, like the Blitz, or Jailhouse Rock, or the Breakfast Club.”

Sometimes the guitars shred, sometimes the bass grabs pole position. Ninety second thrash-outs sit shoulder to shoulder with nine-minute psych monsters, and somehow, it all makes sense.

Last September Wytch Pycknyck released the stomping fuzz attack of single ‘Columbo No.5,’ blending ‘70s and ‘90s guitars into a fierce lo-fi stoner, psychedelic, garage rock brawl, hinting of the sonic barrage to come on the new album, which was recorded at the Forum Recording Studios, in Tunbridge Wells, with Jake Jones (Stefflon Don, Stormzy, Skepta).

Wytch Pycknyck are loud, with a genuine, trashy garage feel. The album may only be seven songs long, but they still find the time to negotiate many different moods and styles. It’s a juggernaut journey of Motorhead partying with the pop-noise of Sonic Youth, all delivered with the stomp and pomp of AC/DC at their manic best.
