THE MERINGUES whipping it up with ‘Royalty’ ahead of September’s album
AHEAD of the September 16 release of their Pavlova’s Dog album, THE MERINGUES whip up new video-single, ‘Royalty.’
Explaining the theory behind the song, Amanda Pants said, “It’s that feeling of having idealized someone, only to discover they didn’t deserve it. Or when you thought you knew someone, but they revealed a different side. This song explores the disorienting feeling of realizing you were wrong about someone or something.”
At the heart of the Kingston, Ontario post-punk powerhouse are Pants and Ted Evans, whose vocal interplay and onstage antics blur the line between banter and intense rivalry, their chemistry supported by the rhythm section of Jackson Baird (bass) and Alastair Morrison (drums).

“The shoot was in a beautiful, older building with no air conditioning on one of the hottest days of the year,” said Evans. “Working with Josh was fantastic, he really brought the video to life. Jackson Baird was featured prominently, especially in the bass-driven section after the guitar solo, which is one of my favourite parts of the album.
“Initially, I didn’t think ‘Royalty’ would make the album, but once the lyrics came together, it took on a different feeling for the band. Alastair and Jackson added parts that quickly made it a standout track. Eventually, we realized it had to be a single, and the music video has solidified it as a band favourite.”
The recording of ‘Royalty’ took place at multiple locations, including Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Todd’s Place in Harrowsmith, and Fake Cake Lodge in Kingston.
