Take a trip to SUNSET RUBDOWN’s ‘Cliché Town,’ full of intolerant, unhinged neighbours.
FROM next month’s ‘Always Happy to Explode’ album, SUNSET RUBDOWN have released their first single in fifteen years, ‘Cliché Town.’
SUNSET RUBDOWN are a Canadian art-rock outfit from Montreal who emerged in 2005 as a solo project from Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug.
However, the project quickly expanded to include Camilla Wynne, Jordan Robson-Cramer, Michael Doerksen, and became known for their surreal, mythological lyrics, releasing albums including ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’ in 2006, and ‘Dragonslayer’ in 2009.
Following their demise in 2009, the band reunited in 2022 announcing the ‘Always Happy To Explode’ album with a lineup featuring Krug, Wynne, Robson-Cramer, and Nic Merz.
The original version of ‘Cliché Town’ was written in 2020 and posted to Krug’s Patreon page as part of his ‘one song per month’ collection, with the demo made almost entirely on Krug’s laptop, consisting of a layered, delayed mess of software synths and canned drums, and was chosen to be reworked with ‘real’ instruments into a full-band, rock version.
Lyrically the song explores feelings of frustration and hopelessness that arise with becoming stuck in a smalltown, specifically the sensation of being trapped next to unhinged neighbours and is partly based on the real-life experiences of friends Krug made since moving to rural Vancouver Island.
