Sixteen-piece collective THE URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT and a cool mix of jazz, hip-hop and old school soul
Los Angeles-based genre-blending sixteen-piece collective THE URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT launch new single ‘Money (feat Oh No)’ today, a mind-blowing combination of jazz, hip-hop and old school soul.
“This track is actually the first time we’ve received a song idea from outside the band,” said RW Enoch, band leader and saxophonist. “Our friend Arjay Smith brought us an absolute gem of a demo and asked if we wanted to turn it into a URP tune. After we remade all the parts with the live band and wrote the song and verses on top, he connected us with Oh No to finish the track with a guest verse.
“In this one, we meditate on every facet of the nature of money – as a symbol of hope and opportunity but also of greed and vice – and in this way, it aligns very nicely with the themes of the album. Is money a blessing or a burden? Glory? Duty? Both?”
The collective features the vocals of Alex Nester, dual emcees Elmer Demond and Slim da Reazon, and a ten-piece horn section. Following recent singles ‘Will to Survive’ featuring Vic Mensa, and ‘Don’t Ask Y’ featuring Camp Lo, URP release fourth studio album ‘Love Glory Duty Death’ on October 24.
