Shades of Dylan on Crockett’s ‘$10 Cowboy’

AMERICAN singer-songwriter CHARLEY CROCKETT has teased the release of his April 26 album, ‘$10 Cowboy,’ with a live performance of the title track on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

And if the name sounds familiar, it is. Charley is a distant relative of American folk hero Davy Crockett, and he’s no stranger to London either having previously headlined Shepherds Bush Empire, and the Jazz Café.

‘$10 Cowboy’ is Crockett’s 13th studio record, following 2022’s critically acclaimed ‘Man From Waco’ which firmly established him as one of the leaders of a sparkling revival of traditional American blues, country, and folk music.

The latest album was recorded live to tape, with up to a dozen musicians on each track, giving the songs the feel of a live performance.

“The reason I cut it on tape is, when you get the right folks in the room, great players rise to the occasion,” he said. “When that red light is on and the tape is rolling, you get the magic of a performance.”

Crockett explores a style favoured by Bob Dylan throughout ‘$10 Cowboy,’ songs with no lyrical hook, just a turn of phrase. And no, he didn’t set out to write a themed record or, through his studied eye, to find America. But with ‘$10 Cowboy,’ he may just have done both.

$10 Cowboy’ is released on April 26th via ‘Thirty Tigers,’ and was recorded at Austin’s Arlyn Studios, produced by Crockett along with long-time collaborator, Billy Horton.

Catch CHARLEY CROCKETT live at London’s Hoxton Hall on May 6th 7th & 8th.
