RED GUITARS TURN TO JAKE ANGEL FOR SPACED OUT TRIP HOP REMIX

WITH their complete and original line-up about to embark on a 40th anniversary UK tour, seminal 80’s post-punk outfit RED GUITARS mark an unexpected collaboration with country hip-hop pioneer Jake Angel with the September 1st release of ‘Good Technology (Cowboy Mix),’ an other-worldly rework of the Hull band’s debut single and number one indie chart hit, with rattlesnake slides, menacing fretless bass and distorted call & response vocals.

Bassist Lou Duffy-Howard took the lead on the new mix and accompanying visuals and said, “We recently had the original ‘Good Technology’ master tape baked and digitised to extract the stems. John took the lead on the official 2023 remix and I worked on the Cowboy Mix with Jake Angel, our drummer Matt’s nephew, who lives in Nashville and produces country hip hop.

“I mixed the original stems, added a live fretless bass, changed the scan of the vocals and separated each line into a call & response format, adding distortion to the answer and panning it to one side. I then made the video, and particularly like the way that the bull moves from left to right as the guitar solo does the same.”

Red Guitars were formed around the pairing of Jeremy Kidd (vocals) and Hallam Lewis (guitarist). Initially cutting their teeth playing benefit shows for a series of left-wing causes, the band quickly built a loyal following, before proving an instant hit with their debut single, shifting an impressive 60,000 copies of Good Technology released via their own Self Drive Records label, before topping the Independent Charts with consecutive No.1s with the classic cuts Marimba Jive and Steeltown.

Releasing their influential debut album ‘Slow To Fade’ in 1984, frontman Jeremy Kidd announced his departure soon after and Red Guitars ultimately disbanded completely two years later.

Reformed in their original line-up for a short, mostly sold-out tour last year, the five-piece rediscovered their musical mojo, with new material written and recording currently underway for their first new album in over three decades, slated for 2024.
