“Raw ability isn’t what creates devoted listeners. Personal stories do.” No ‘Apology’ from SXVXNT.

VIA Santa Monica-based ‘Sound Of Cannae,’ the latest single from South Carolina’s rapper/singer SXVXNT, ‘The Apology feat. Derek Howa (prod. by De La Croix),’ is now available for download, purchase and streaming.

The song is a would-be father’s letter of apology to his unborn, and by extension, their mother. It’s De La Croix laced, string section driven, classic boom bap style instrumental, melds and meshes seamlessly with a warm piano outro from Vinyl Party band affiliate, Derek Howa.

“I dreamed the song before I wrote it,” he said, “and ultimately, I wrote the song because I was tired of dreaming about it.

“But I’m the son of a Baptist minister, and at the time of writing, no one knew the story except the woman with whom I’d shared the experience. I wasn’t ready to have the correlating conversation with my parents, let alone have it be discussed in any sort of public forum. The song was never intended to be released. It was strictly catharsis.

“One of my younger brothers arrived at a similar crossroads and asked me to weigh in. He had no idea I’d already been where he was, or how thoroughly I’d thought about the matter. Instead of giving him a ‘big bro’ lecture, I sent him the song. He thanked me, made his decision, and told me I should stop sitting on the song.

“I rap well, and I sing decently, but those abilities are apparent to anyone who’s heard me for thirty seconds. But raw ability isn’t what creates devoted listeners. Personal stories do.”

Constant urging from Sxvxnt’s collaborative partners eventually led to the song’s release.

“What he’s rapping about obviously isn’t uncommon,” added Howa, “but I don’t think I’ve ever heard a man – let alone a rapper – address it this way.”

‘The Apology’ serves as a bookend to a productive two-year stretch for the classically trained trumpet player. “It’s been a whirlwind last two years. Lots of new stages, and new listeners. And as excited as I’ve been to perform for them, almost everything they’ve heard has been old. It’s time for new drops.”
