NUNNY BOY’S ‘DESERT ISLAND ALBUM’

TRAPPED on a desert island with only one album? Let’s hope a nice bottle of rum washes up. Strangely enough I did once find a letter in a bottle that came from America all the way to Scotland, but we’ll save that story for another time.

Like many people I have a vast collection of music, all types of genres, hip hop, reggae, grunge, etc, it would be so easy to say I love Nirvana (which I do) but if I can only pick one album?

Some people may find it a hard task to only pick one album, for me this was easy, there could only ever be one, and that would have to be James Brown Live at the Apollo (1963).

I’ve owned this album so many times on cassette, vinyl, CD  and even digital. I never get tired of listening to it.  There’s a shed load of James Brown albums out there, but this is one that I always go back to, I could pretty much sing the full album to you in a terrible Scottish voice word for word.

As many folks will know James Brown has been sampled by so many artists over the years, I’m even guilty of reaching for a JB record when looking for a little noise to scratch with on the turntables, he’s just so infectious. In my humble opinion he’s one of the greatest artists of all time.

I really fell in love with the Live at the Apollo album, as for me you get to hear the band (The Famous Flames) with a different sound from what we all know & love about JB nowadays. One massive thing to remember is that this whole album was recorded live in one night on October 24, 1962. You cannot fault anything in the entire recording.

The hardest thing for me is to pick a favourite track from this album, usually I just play it all from start to finish, but certain tracks like ‘Try me’ and ‘Lost Someone’ will always have a special place in my heart.

A lot of good music gets associated with certain times in a person’s life,  this album just keeps getting played and making the good times even better!
