LOVEJOY rework Alan McGee penned ‘Let There Be Love.’ “Things were chaotic, and so were we.”
OUT now from LOVEJOY, the new double A-side single, ‘Let There Be Love,’ a beautiful piece of music with gentle undercurrents of ‘Love Story’ era Lloyd Cole, Paddy McAloon, all bathed in a subtle, Laurel Canyon vibe.
Following last year’s return to the limelight with the ‘…And It’s Love!’ long player – complete with Alan McGee penned sleeve notes – Lovejoy’s Dick Preece took to the live arena performing songs acoustically in support of the album.
And that eventually led to Preece and McGee collaborating on the recording of lost Biff Bang Pow! song, ‘Let There Be Love.’
“It’s one of the three or four best songs I ever wrote for Biff Bang Pow! said McGee. “We played it a few times live and I can’t believe we never recorded it at the time. But things were chaotic and so were we. In all the madness, we just forgot.”
However, McGee suggested to Preece that Lovejoy should cover the long-forgotten classic.
“Talk about pressure to get it right, what a responsibility,” adds Preece, “But we played the song through together, talked about what it needed, swapped ideas and gradually both versions came together. When Spinout Nuggets and Creation Youth agreed to co-release the songs as a 7” single, I was just so thrilled.”
