IMPOSSIBLE MULE’s latest album proving beyond doubt, “All you need is love”

SOUTHAMPTON’s very own Marsyas, Keegan Wilson – aka IMPOSSIBLE MULE – has just released his unconventional, genre-fluid album ‘The Reality Could Not Be Further From The Truth,’ (TTCNBFFTT) a collection of ten tunes dipping their toes into electronica, soul, blues and rock.

“The album is a dramatic departure from my usual lo-fi, doom-laden folk,” he said, “and showcases a diverse range of influences, including Funkadelic, Nine Inch Nails, The Animal Collective, Muddy Waters and The Chemical Brothers.

“But I am really happy with the new direction and this collection of songs. I decided to make an album that is more accessible, and if there is a theme running through it, I guess it would be that we are stronger together than divided – don’t make life more difficult for yourself and others than it has to be.

“’Picnic’ is a laid-back, groove of a love song, blues riffs and hip-hop beats, and some lush, soulful vocals. Everyone who is in love should at one time or another picnic on a hay bale and drink champagne.”

“But ‘Balance [below] is probably my favourite track because I like reparative hypnotic music. It begins with edgy, hypnotic bass lines. You think it is going to turn dark, but the song unexpectedly explodes with kaleidoscopic synths that lift the spirit.

“The middle gives way to a piece of introspection where the song ruminates on the barriers we put up to keep others out before the synths return with sitar and harmonies. This track begins the spiritual section of the album, an admission to recognise your faults and to accept that it is okay, and that there is something more than this out there.”

’The Seed’ is certainly the pinnacle of the album’s spiritual side. Mellotron and acid rock with a solo by Damian Cook who seems to conjure up the spirit of Maggot Brain. Throughout, I’m delivering a sermon, revealing real life miracles before proclaiming we, and everything, in the universe is one.

“I love Funkadelic. It’s not just great music, but they have great humour and a lot of profound wisdom that they choose to share, this is something I aspired to with this track, and Damian – who wrote all the music and played all the instruments on it – is a special talent. I believe he is the best guitar player in the country, and I hope one day people get to discover his music.”

Despite its occasional deep subject matters, TTCNBFFTT is an album to be enjoyed, an album of hope, an album of light, and an album with a message. “All you need is love, but love can damage also, and so we need to be kind to each other,” added Wilson.
