GOODBYE WUDAOKOU – A worthy addition to the list of Manchester’s musical legends
Mat Mills – the man behind Manchester-based GOODBYE WUDAOKOU – ends the year on the highest of highs with the release of his ‘Anything Of Us’ album, a joyful odyssey through the very best of the genre-defining Mani-chester scene, the full-length clearly deserving its place at the higher end of the list of Manchester’s music legends.
“While I didn’t set out to write or create something with a particular Manchester sound,” he said, “I guess that influence must be in there somewhere in my DNA, and there’s the obvious point that my Mancunian roots are present in my vocals.”
“To tell you the truth, I had a bit of a love hate relationship with music from my home city growing up, possibly because in the late ‘90s it felt like there were lots of bands that were essentially just Oasis knockoffs, and my interest lay a bit further afield in post-rock and American indie. But then, I also fell in love with Joy Division and The Smiths.
“Also, while my recent influences have probably veered more towards jangle and indie pop, particularly the albums coming out on Oakland’s Slumberland Records the past few years, there’s definitely a cross-pollination factor.
“That being said, I’d hope my music fits more into the spirit of Manchester’s vibrancy and variety of music, rather than retreading too much old ground.”
Mills has also announced debut album ‘Mirror Skies’ has been reissued (via Subjangle) on limited edition CD.
“When I was recording the album, I really wasn’t sure anyone would hear it, so it’s somewhat surreal to see it getting a reissue,” he added. “The album itself is nice and lo-fi, a bit shambling, a bit jangle, a bit shoegaze, a little post-punk and all pop. It was three years in the making but maybe a lifetime as well.”
