ANA BARAJAS honours the undisputed dance of love with new single, ‘Siboney’
OUT of Texas via the Columbian Andes, and taken from her upcoming ‘Mango Hotel’ album, ANA BARAJAS today releases ‘Siboney,’ a song which captures magnificently the sweltering eroticism of the Bolero, the undisputed dance of love.
“’Siboney’ is a classic Cuban song written by Ernesto Lecuona in 1929,” explains Barajas. “And for this version I was very influenced by the Exotica music from the late 1950s and the film noir aesthetics.
“The song starts with a sample of an instrumental track from a Mexican noir movie from the ‘50s. But I also wanted to break completely with the traditional versions and do something more adventurous – and it definitely has some influences from Tom Waits as well.
“Regarding the video, I just wanted to take that same idea of making an homage to film noir-type movies made in Latin America or that had that theme. I worked on researching old movies and finding clips that I found interesting or connected to the sonic landscape of the song, then I intervened with textures and things like that.
“For my ‘Mango Hotel’ album, I have recorded a collection of classics previous to 1970, just playing with the idea of recreating different versions. I think it is a great exercise for creativity and for learning more about songs and their composers.
“The album was recorded during the pandemic, so it was a very interesting exercise in remote production. Most of the musicians who were either in other cities in the US or in Colombia at that time. They would send their tracks, and we would work on the final versions together.
“I produced this album with Phil Spencer, a great friend of mine. We met in that world of playing live versions of songs, although both of us have our own original music. He is a super creative guy and I think we are both curious people, always interested in exploring sounds and stuff like that.”
