ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Camille Schmidt, ‘Nude #9’

THE debut album from queer Brooklyn-based ‘indie rock meets folk pop singer songwriter’ CAMILLE SCHMIDT ‘Nude #9’ is released today – a ten-track collection of revealing, personal portraits of herself, her family, former, and future lovers.

Schmidt’s debut EP ‘Good Person’ was released last June, six songs showcasing her ability to balance an innately wry sense of humour with moments of quiet devastating self-reflection.

But ‘Nude #9’ sees the singer broadening her palette to include starry-eyed ambient soundscapes and thrumming post-punk rhythms while digging deeper into romance, sexuality, friendship, and her own sense of self. The result? A sincere, unpredictable, hilarious, deeply felt album.

“A lot of these songs were written completely stream of consciousness,” she said. “I spent so much of my life not being honest with myself or other people, I thought, what if I stop trying to get good with myself? With anyone else? What if I just reflect the truth of what I’ve seen? What if I just say what happened?”

Schmidt worked with LA-based producer Ben Zaidi, with the album featuring bass from frequent collaborator Eli Heath, sound sculpting from Michael Haldeman, additional guitar from Sam Acchione and Jacob Drab, and additional percussion from Kane Ritchotte and W. Alexander.
