“Aging, endings and new beginnings” OCTOBERMAN unveil contemplative new album
THE thinking man’s indie/folk/rock collective OCTOBERMAN today unveil album number seven, ‘Chutes’ via Ishmalia Records.
Fronted by songwriter and vocalist Marc Morrissette, ‘Chutes’ explores aging, memory, and the shifting nature of relationships, examining those subjects with a warm, tender, intimate spirit.
“I knew for Chutes that I wanted to take a DIY, live and organic approach as much as possible,” he said. “This led us back to Little Bullhorn studios in Ottawa, where we had recorded a few times in the past. Being able to work with our longtime friend Jarrett Bartlett was great as was being able to record the core of the songs in analog. We were then able to dress them up from home studios afterwards. The end result is a more spare and relaxed sounding album with new instrumentation ideas such as accordion, banjo and vibraphone that hadn’t shown up on Octoberman records previously.
“In terms of the songwriting, half of these songs were from old demo ideas found on a hard drive that all happen to be third party story telling songs about complete strangers. And the other half are newer and more introspective songs that capture the idea of aging, endings and new beginnings.”
‘Chutes’ features contributions from regular bandmates Marshall Bureau (drums/vibraphone), Tavo Diez de Bonilla (bass/vocs), J.J. Ipsen (guitar/keys), and Annelise Noronha (accordion/banjo/guitar/backing vocs).
