‘About A Cow’ CHARLES JAMES & THE RISE and a modern-day tale of avarice and consumption
FROM recent debut album ‘Crossing the Bar,’ CHARLES JAMES & THE RISE return with new single, ‘About A Cow,’ a modern-day tale of avarice and consumption, portrayed via an unlikely source – a cow.
“It’s a song that’s had a number of lives and has been with me for a long time,” said frontman and songwriter, Charles James O’Donnell. “As abstract the notion may seem, the lyrics hit on the sacrifice that’s made in all forms to service greed and the longer-term impacts this has.”
Today’s release develops like a dark pastoral fable, brought to life through Catherine O’Donnell’s piano, strings from Waterboys fiddler Steve Wickham, and cellist Laura McFadden.
‘Crossing the Bar’ was inspired by Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s mournful poem of the same name, with the album transforming themes of death and departure, into songs of solace and renewal.
“The album is a journey through loss, its different stages, and the idea that those we’ve loved and lost are never truly gone but waiting for us across the bar,” added O’Donnell.
‘About A Cow’ was produced, engineered and mixed by Orri McBrearty, mastered by Pete Maher, and recorded at Donegal’s Attica Audio.
